Bovine Fasciolosis (Liver Fluke Disease)
Definition & Cause
Bovine fasciolosis is a parasitic disease of cattle caused by liver flukes, mainly:
Fasciola hepatica
Fasciola gigantica
These parasites live in the liver, causing serious damage to animal health and reducing productivity.
Transmission
The disease is transmitted through freshwater snails (intermediate hosts), such as:
Lymnaea truncatula (for F. hepatica)
Lymnaea auricularia and L. natalensis (for F. gigantica)
Infective larvae (metacercariae) attach to vegetation.
Cattle become infected when grazing on contaminated pasture.
Risk is higher:
In marshy or poorly drained areas
During rainy seasons
Near water bodies where snails thrive
Clinical Signs
Severity depends on infection level:
Acute form:
Sudden death due to severe liver damage
Chronic form (more common):
Weight loss
Reduced appetite
Weakness (lethargy)
Diarrhea
Bottle jaw (swelling under jaw)
Anemia and jaundice
Decreased milk production
Lesions (Post-mortem Findings)
Enlarged, fragile liver with necrosis and fibrosis
Thickened bile ducts containing adult flukes
“Pipe-stem liver” (calcified bile ducts)
Sometimes cysts in lungs
May be associated with Black disease (Clostridium infection)
Diagnosis
F***l examination (microscopic detection of eggs)
ELISA test for early detection (coproantigens)
Elevated liver enzymes in blood tests
Differentiate from Paramphistomum eggs (which look similar)
Differential Diagnosis
Johne’s disease
Bovine tuberculosis
Treatment
Triclabendazole: 12 mg/kg orally (effective for all stages)
Alternatives:
Closantel: 10 mg/kg
Oxyclozanide: 15–20 mg/kg
Rafoxanide: 7.5 mg/kg
Supportive care:
Antibiotics for secondary infections
Vitamin supplementation
Control & Prevention
Avoid grazing in wet, marshy areas
Improve pasture drainage
Control snail populations
Proper disposal of animal waste
Treat forage before feeding
Regular deworming and herd management
