কিছু উপন্যাস পড়ে শেষ হয়, আর কিছু উপন্যাস শেষ হওয়ার পরও পাঠকের ভেতর দীর্ঘদিন বেঁচে থাকে। হুমায়ূন আহমেদের অপেক্ষা সেই বিরল উপন্যাসগুলোর একটি।

উপন্যাসের শেষ দৃশ্যটি বাংলা সাহিত্যের অন্যতম স্মরণীয় সমাপ্তিগুলোর একটি। শেষের সেই কলিংবেলের শব্দ যেন সুরাইয়ার জন্য এক 'শ্রোডিঙ্গারের বাক্স'—যতক্ষণ দরজা খোলা হচ্ছে না, ততক্ষণ ফিরে আসা এবং না-ফেরার সম্ভাবনা পাশাপাশি বেঁচে থাকে।আর সেই সম্ভাবনাকেই অক্ষত রেখে হুমায়ূন আহমেদ গল্পের ইতি টানেন।

সব প্রশ্নের উত্তর দিয়ে গল্প শেষ হয় না। কিছু গল্পের সৌন্দর্য উত্তরহীনতায়, কিছু সমাপ্তির শক্তি অপেক্ষাকে বাঁচিয়ে রাখায়।

হয়তো এ কারণেই উপন্যাসটির নাম 'অপেক্ষা'—কারণ বই শেষ হয়, কিন্তু অপেক্ষা শেষ হয় না।
