Sugar Gum Photography

Sugar Gum Photography Love the Aussie bush and love photography. Looking forward to sharing my beautiful little corner of God's creation with you. I love the Aussie bush.

There is nothing quite like our ever changing, unique and ruggedly beautiful Australian landscape. I'm an amateur/hobbyist photographer from the Avon Valley in WA. I have decided it's time for me to get out of auto mode and learn to use my camera. Follow my journey from the very beginning..

One of my favourites ..šŸ’™.. Blue Lechenaultia has been really abundant this year, on roadsides and all through the bush. So vibrant! Puts a smile on my face every time I drive by. šŸ’

If you find yourself in the bush, don't forget to look around! This time of year, there is always something special to discover.

These images were taken in Wongan Hills and are just some of the beautiful varieties of wildflowers in that region.

There is waving of grass in the breeze
And a song in the air,
And a murmur of myriad bees
That toil everywhere.
There is scent in the blossom and bough,
And the breath of the Spring
Is as soft as a kiss on a brow --
And Spring-time I sing..

(A Singer of the Bush ~ Banjo Patterson)

Happy first day of Spring, my favourite time of year! This image is from last season, but I will be getting out and about with my camera soon. Time to hit the road again!

Across the stony ridges,
Across the rolling plain,
Young Harry Dale, the drover,
Comes riding home again.
And well his stock-horse bears him,
And light of heart is he,
And stoutly his old pack-horse
Is trotting by his knee.

Up Queensland way with cattle
He's travelled regions vast,
And many months have vanished
Since home-folk saw him last.
He hums a song of someone
He hopes to marry soon;
And hobble-chains and camp-ware
Keep jingling to the tune.

Beyond the hazy dado
Against the lower skies
And yon blue line of ranges
The station homestead lies.
And thitherward the drover
Jogs through the lazy noon,
While hobble-chains and camp-ware
Are jingling to a tune..

(~Ballad Of The Drover, by Henry Lawson~)

Aurora Australis! Totally out of my comfort zone with this type of photography but how could I not? This was taken last night in the Avon Valley WA at around 7:20pm. I could actually see the shimmering beams and a hint of colour. Quite special really!

One of my images was recently published in the R.M.Williams OUTBACK magazine. In an article called Designs on the Land, a section about our home grown Australian bush architecture.

"The Murchison District is a huge area, but I think there wouldn't have been a person in it who didn't know the name of Alf Couch in the 1940s.."

"I suppose his trademark was the curved roof of corrugated iron, which you can see in almost all of his buildings, large or small.."

"That's not just aesthetics, it's clever design.."

A hallmark of travelling architect Alf Couch's 1940s designs is the use of curved corrugated iron, as seen here on Wooleen Station in WA's Murchison District.

A land of sombre, silent hills, where mountain cattle go
By twisted tracks, on sidelings deep, where giant gum trees grow
And the wind replies, in the river oaks, to the song of the stream below..

A land where silence lies so deep that sound itself is dead
And a gaunt grey bird, like a homeless soul, drifts, noiseless, overhead..

~ Mellenbye Station in all its Super Moon Glory! ~

I took this photo back in August 2022. It was windy and I didn't have much time for the shot but being on that station as that super moon rose was something I will never forget. Absolutely breathtaking! Even more nostalgic now that the station has been closed to visitors.

For that strip of sapphire sea
Set against the sky
Far horizons means to me—
And the ships go by
Framed between the empty sky
And the yellow sands,
While my freed thoughts follow them
Out to other lands.

All its changes who can tell?
I have seen it shine
Like a jewel polished well,
Hard and clear and fine;
Then soft lilac—and again
On another day
Glimpsed it through a veil of rain,
Shifting, drifting grey.

When the livid waters flee,
Flinching from the storm,
From my window I can see,
Standing safe and warm,
How the white foam tosses high
On the naked shore,
And the breakers’ thunder grows
To a battle-roar…
