FEJO AND THE CRUIZERS … winners of the Battle of the bands at Barunga Festival. A cool bunch of fellas from Ntaria/Hermannsberg, west of Alice Springs. Apart from a photo shoot and song-writing workshop with Troy Cassar-Daley, first prize was playing on the main stage. What a great performance from this band … the audience went off. Congratulations to the organisers and traditional owners. I have been to at least six festivals over the years and this was the best (except, of course, in 1988 when the Barunga Statement was presented – now, that was a moment).

BOOK TALK … on Wednesday May 13 I will conduct a book talk at the NT Library at Danala in downtown Darwin. It will be about my latest book Decades in Darwin Volume 2 – how it evolved and the stories I covered for various magazines from 2000 to 2020. This is a terrific venue with opportunity to display images on a large scale. All are welcome!

TOP END WRESTLING … a great show by Jake and the crew from TEW at Yarrawonga. I half expected Hulk Hogan or Mario Milano to jump into the ring but I reckon these guys were actually better. They really know how to entertain with plenty of action and some Vegas drama. In particular, the kids loved it!

SANDS STUDIO SHOWCASE … is a highlight of Easter in Darwin. While others go fishing, I pop down to Mayberry to catch some of Darwin’s best bands and musos. Tehana, Leah Flanagan, Zaza Zoo, Clink and EAST POINT were among my favourites. Well done Rowan Dally and the crew for organising the gig!

EGRETS … beautiful, graceful birds and a delight to see at close range. I needed a break from shooting corporate gigs so headed out to Fogg Dam with the delightful (but irreverent) Therese Ritchie. A great place to go in the wet season -all kinds of birds were lined up at the overflow to catch fingerlings.

QM2 ... You never know what you will strike walking around Darwin's waterfront. Queen Mary 2 not only brought a load of geriatric tourists to town but the captain actually parked the boat in the best photogenic position.

BOMBING OF DARWIN … Each year, February 19 heralds a significant event in Darwin’s history. At 9.58 am, an air raid siren breaks the silence as hundreds of people gather at the cenotaph overlooking Darwin Harbour, signalling the first attack on the city by Japanese warcraft in 1942.

On that fateful day during World War II, more than 300 people were killed in two raids by 242 Japanese planes that unleashed over 680 bombs on the city - more than were dropped on Pearl Harbour. Twenty military aircraft and eight ships at anchor in the harbour were destroyed, including the destroyer USS Peary. Many civilians, including waterside workers who were unloading freighters at the time, died.

While the ceremony is always moving (and quite performative with soldiers using field artillery), I will always remember the 50th anniversary when Tiwi people performed their special dance that tells the story of Japanese aircraft flying low over their country to the north of Darwin; and, of course, survivors of the USS Peary laying wreaths.

MUD RACING … is an iconic event in Darwin during the wet season. Families come from far and wide to witness one of the best spectacles in the Top End. Men and women of all ages drive some of the most bizarre-looking vehicles at top speed through a swampy, boggy course at Hidden Valley Raceway. Kids and teenagers line up along the fences to be sprayed as the cars rip by. A great night!
