The work the volunteers are doing across Sri Lanka to try and save Turtles is amazing. When we visited the Turtle Hatchery recently it was sad to some of the injured turtles, but also great to see some many successfully bred and returned to good health with a good released program.

I’m all for nature, but hate the damage ghost nets cause to our marine life.

I don’t usually support these as I know the days have been removed, however on this day I weakened, having just walked up and down Sigiriya Rock in 38 degree heat.

This was quite a large Cobra and full of life.

Koggala Beach, Sri Lanka - Stilt Fishermen

Stilt fishermen rely on this method of fishing when they do not have access or the means for advanced fishing equipment for this technique requires only a stilt made with two wooden poles, where one long thin pole of 3 or 4 metres is tied to a wooden stick which is nailed into the sea bed in shallow waters of the ocean and the other pole is erected as a crossbar which functions as a seat for the fishermen to sit, perched on these vertical poles for several hours waiting to capture fish by using their fishing rods made out of Bamboo or kithul wood. Afterwards they store the catch in a bag tied to the pole or their waist.

This skillful practice looks rather easy and effortless but requires immense patience and perseverance since the stilt fishermen have to balance themselves by holding onto the stilt with one hand and hold the rod with the other while waiting for many hours in silence for the catch. Stilt fishing is done in the early morning until about 9am and in the late afternoon around 4 pm, because the fish are said to come close to the shore in the morning and go back to the deep sea during sundown. After they wind up the morning session, they sell their day’s catch before returning in the evening. They usually catch small fish such as spotted herring and mackerel.

Sri Lanka has two Monitor Lizards - the Land Monitor - which we came upon several times throughout our time in Yala National Park and the water monitor. I managed to capture a couple of nice pictures (and a video) of a few of them.

We saw plenty of Mongoose on our travels both Ruddy and Indian Grey.
