A road trip out to Goondiwindi for another round of the Drummond Golf South East Tour with Glasshouse Mountains Junior Golf.
Today’s event was held in conjunction with the Carrington Cotton Junior Classic and I have to say Goondiwindi Golf Club, their junior committee and Glasshouse Mountains Junior Golf put on an absolute show.
Chipping competitions, raffles, fireworks, games and some amazing food set the scene. Unbelievably everything was completely free for players, friends and families thanks to the club, volunteers and incredibly generous sponsors. The weekend these junior golfers experienced should be the standard all clubs look towards. Goondiwindi Golf Club are definitely setting the bar high.
Now to the golf.
The regular caddie was off the bag today and Ben one of Mason’s best mates from school stepped in to caddie for him. He did an amazing job. For a kid who has not played alot of golf before did a great job reading yardages and helping Mason with his club selection. It was so nice to see the two of them enjoying the experience together. We got to play in a group with some good mates and it was so good to watch them today, they were all on fire today and all played great rounds.
We got off to a shaky start, spraying the first drive into the cricket field. Luckily it was a free relief and we managed to get off the first hole with a bogey.
A well-deserved par on the next hole was a good start to settling things down but the third hole didn’t go to plan and we had to write the dreaded 8 on the scorecard. I was a little worried about where his headspace would go after that but I was so impressed to see him step onto the next tee, smash a drive straight up the middle and then finish the rest of the round just 1-over par. Unfortunately, the damage from the 8 pushed him into 3rd place but what impressed me most was the way he handled himself after a tough hole. He reset, stayed positive and got the job done.
A massive thanks to everyone involved in today’s event. Can’t wait for next year
