Aria Berwick proved that versatility is a valuable asset over the weekend. Usually found between the posts, the aspiring goalkeeper stepped out of goal to stretch her legs and embraced a new challenge up front.

The switch paid off perfectly, with Aria finding the back of the net and securing a well deserved goal for her team. A fantastic reward for her willingness to step outside her comfort zone and contribute wherever she was needed.

A little bit more about Bentleigh..

I first met this little old soul last season when he was in goals against the Olympians girls team. He probably should have been watching the ball, but he was far more interested in having a chat.

I was immediately impressed by his manners and his positive attitude towards our girls, who were still finding their feet - and their confidence - in their inaugural season. He was full of genuine compliments, telling me they were “pretty good for girls,” that my daughter was “really fast,” and that my camera was “cool.” 😎

I liked him instantly.

He spent more time swinging off the goalpost and looking over his shoulder to talk to me than he did watching the game. I probably should have warned him the ball was coming, but he was completely invested in whatever story he was telling.

As it turns out, he has exceptional peripheral vision. Without missing a beat, he threw out one hand, stopped what looked like a certain goal, turned to me and grinned, “Told you they were good - that one nearly went in!” 🤣

It’s not every day you meet little people like Bentleigh anymore, so I wrote to his club praising his personality and sportsmanship. It made my day when they celebrated him on social media for it.

My son’s team played against him last week, and it turns out he’s every bit as talented on the field as he is between the posts.

I was excited to capture these photos of this little person with a huge personality, and I can’t wait to keep following his soccer journey through the lens.

Bentleigh has stepped up from Under 9s this year and made an immediate impact in his first season of Under 11s soccer. From day one, he has embraced the challenge of playing in an older age group and has consistently impressed with his determination, attitude, and team-first approach.

A quick learner with a fantastic work ethic, Bentleigh gives 100% effort in every training session and every drill. He is always eager to learn, improve, and take on feedback, making him a pleasure to coach. His commitment and positive attitude have earned the respect of his teammates, who voted him Players’ Choice Captain.

Throughout our first tournament and grading games, Bentleigh led by example. He consistently put the team’s success ahead of his own, often sacrificing his individual game to ensure the team had the best opportunity to succeed. His leadership comes through his actions, work rate, and willingness to do whatever is required for the team.

One of Bentleigh’s greatest strengths is his versatility. Whether playing as a forward, in midfield, or in defence, he approaches every role with the same enthusiasm and commitment. No challenge is too big, and he is never afraid to compete against bigger or stronger opponents.

For both myself and Mario, Bentleigh has been a standout this season. His courage, work ethic, leadership, and willingness to learn have set him apart, and he has a very bright future ahead of him. He is undoubtedly a player to watch in the years to come.

⚽️💜FEMALE FOOTBALL WEEK💜⚽️

Bringing Female Football Week to a close by celebrating my own daughter - Quinn Slottje.

Quinn started her soccer journey as a sideline sibling, only joining in at training for the promise of a canteen meal afterwards. That continued for two years before our family moved to Olympians.

One night she spotted her kindergarten friend Oskar at training, followed him onto the field, and soon returned with Alice Duncan by her side. The two have been inseparable ever since, and Quinn’s passion for soccer has grown alongside that friendship.

At first, Quinn had her heart set on being a goalkeeper, but quickly discovered that keeping goals is not for the faint-hearted. These days she is naturally finding her place as a striker. For someone who doesn’t usually enjoy expending too much energy, when game day arrives and the goals are in sight - that girl can move!

Diagnosed profoundly deaf at 10 months old Quinn was implanted with cochlear implants at 13 months. Quinn is, to my knowledge, the only profoundly deaf player in the Latrobe Valley league.

We were incredibly honoured when she was invited to attend a training camp at the Australian Institute of Sport through Deaf Football Australia. It was an amazing opportunity that not only exposed us to pathways available for young Australian soccer athletes, but also introduced us to Deaf and hard of hearing culture within the football community.

Watching Quinn grow in confidence, ability, and love for the game has been something truly special. She continues to prove that passion, determination, and the right outfit can overcome any barrier.

Look good, feel good, play good apparently 💅🏻

We are so proud of you Quinny girl. Whether it’s from the sidelines or in life in general, we will always be there cheering you on.
