I was asked one day, what is it that I like to photograph, to capture, my favorite thing, style and he used the word genre. My instant answer even surprised me.
“I like to capture what you, cant see”
I have lived by these words for 35 years, they will be on my headstone:
Most men see things as they are and ask “Why?”
I dream things that don’t exist and ask “Why Not?”
Might be hard to understand or explain, you look at an image and the obvious hits you, the things you see and notice, but what you cant see in the image has made what you can see clearer, more obvious.
That’s also the reason I have Yarns - Story's with them, that helps with you the viewer understanding what you cant see in that image that has helped make it better.
Images can have to much information in them because you have done everything to capture what you eye saw, looking for a different angle, light or perspective can change what you are trying to convey.
Shadows or no shadows, contrast or no contrasts, the detail, fine, clear or blurred can alter an image and make it a totally different story. You have to either stop, look hard and think about it or make it an instant part of how you see the view, it can be learned and incorporated into your work flow.
The other thing is I visualized instantly the finished image, before I had taken it I knew how I wanted it to look, so you shoot for that, not I got a shot, now what do I do with it.
I loved doing portraits of everything, It was so you could see its personality, what it was even thinking and above all its beauty,For me the viewer has to go.
Lastly, don’t just flick through, stop and look at an image, there is so much that you don’t see!!!! Unless you slow the eyes down, drink the image in for awhile, they will make more sense.
This is called "Quiet Reflection" it is like two mates just sitting around enjoying the sun light on there faces, looking at how amazing it all is, they have this look of wonderment, contentment, it is one of my favorites, not my best, just speaks to me about how busy we have gotten, how we have forgotten as kids we looked at everything with wonderment and excitement , we were inspired by what we saw and experienced.
We have lost that! So lets find it again, I recon these photo have.
