Recognising the 30th anniversary of the passing of Max Dupain on 27 July 1992, here are several more wonderful images from his body of work kept at the NSW State Library (this post wouldnt allow their titles to be inserted). The first image is of Easts Beach, the second of a foreshore scene at Lake Macquarie. Max wanted his studio manager Jill White to continue his work and she inherited his exhibition archive to do this in 1995. Jill honoured this by producing three books, curating around a dozen exhibitions along with giving numerous interviews and talks. I have created and maintained the MD website where many of his images can be viewed. A biography is currently being written about his life by Helen Ennis, who wrote the biography of Olive Cotton, Max's first wife and fellow photographer. Max's legacy continues.

30th Anniversary of Max Dupain's passing (b.1911-d.1992)
Max passed away 30 years ago - 27 July 1992 - and I thought I would recognise his passing by displaying these unseen images (for most people). After sifting through hundreds of Max's images in the Archive, I selected the following images for their classic Dupain style of lighting and camera angle, and also spontaneity. The images in the following posts will be followed by other images around the date of his passing. Hope you enjoy them.

Hello to all Max Dupain friends, thought I'd share a sales experience with you that Im sure you would understand. I sold a beautiful 75cm print of "Morning mist envelops the Sydney Harbour Bridge' last week. The print, based on a very touched up and refined file of the scanned negative, was delivered and the client quickly rejected it because it wasnt "perfect". She got up very close to analyse it and found some subtle blemishes in the sky/mist area (where any blemishes will stand out) and couldnt be convinced that this is normal for scans of 70 year old negatives, and perhaps part of the charm of very old images. The subtle blemishes were not noticeable from a metre away and previous clients had been very happy with it. I also pointed out that all of Max's prints when enlarged to this size should not be viewed up close but at least 1 metre away, or more. Unlike digital based images, these enlarged fine art prints will be pixellated if you get too close. So if you ever purchase a MD print, dont expect 'perfection' - however you define that (what is perfection?). I had the larger version of this print in my Light & Shadow Fine Art Gallery and no one ever complained that it wasnt "perfect". What do you think? Should images taken 70-90 years ago be as smooth and 'perfect' as yesterdays's images?
