Ararat railway station yard is busy with Victorian Railways (VR) locomotives T class T385, and J class steam locos J543 and J526 shunting goods wagons. Out of this lineup, only T385 is still around today. The day of this post also marks 59 years since the withdrawal of J543 on 30 May 1967.

SAR 300 class Redhen railcar 321 at Belair railway station, photo processed November 1964. Belair remains accessible by passenger train and is now the terminus for metro services. Meanwhile, railcar 321 is preserved at the National Railway Museum, Port Adelaide and has been kept in operational condition for shuttle runs. However, it will never reach Belair again due to the separation of the NRM broad gauge track from the Adelaide Metro network.

Victorian Railways (VR) J class steam locomotive J538 was withdrawn from service on this day 48 years ago, 29 May 1978. The VR kept some steam locomotives in pilot/shunter roles until the late 1970s, with a K class being the last locomotive to remain with the VR in this role.

The pictures below show J538 hauling a Vintage Train between Ballarat - Newlyn on an overcast 3 December 1966. Locations aren’t written down for any of these photos, so any assistance would be helpful.

J538 no longer exists, but another J withdrawn on the same day was preserved in operational condition.

V/Line N class diesel locomotive N474 entered service on this day 39 years ago, 28 May 1987!
The locomotive has spent most of its career hauling regional passenger trains in Victoria, but as of the past couple months, it is now leased to Southern Shorthaul Railroad (SSR) for freight service.

The below photo shows N474 early in its career with a passenger train heading around the Bull Farm curves just out of Bacchus Marsh, processed February 1988. Scanned from the late Geoff Burgoyne collection.

The ARHS Last Train to Mt Pleasant tour arriving at Mitcham on the down journey with South Australian Railways (SAR) 700 class steam locomotive 706, 3 March 1963. Both the locomotive and railway line are lost to time, and the Mount Pleasant railway line now has a rail trail along much of its length.

The Rail Motor Society’s Tri-State tour departed Adelaide with New South Wales Government Railways (NSWGR) 620/720 class railcars 621/721 on this day 4 years ago, 27 May 2022!

This tour, which covered New South Wales, South Australia, and Victoria, is currently the latest mainline heritage tour to run in SA (not including the ALARC tests and transfers). While states like NSW and VIC continue to run successful heritage train tours on the mainline, South Australia has only had them on a sporadic, infrequent basis for a number of years.
