With Pacific National (PN) commencing the scrapping of the remaining Australian National (AN) DL class diesel locomotives at Werris Creek, NSW today (starting with DL47), it’s not looking very good for the DLs. It’s very possible that the whole class will be scrapped, with no public plans for any of the DLs to go to other organisations who may want to use or preserve one.

Given the significance of the occasion, I thought I’d mark it and try have a look for DLs in the portion of the late Geoff Burgoyne’s collection that I have, and coincidentally found photos of the exact locomotive that was scrapped today, DL47. With the impending disappearance of the class, photo and video records by rail enthusiasts will be very important in remembering this part of Aussie rail history.

Did you ever get to see or photograph a DL? While I never saw one myself, I’m quite happy to share these Geoff Burgoyne photos to remember them.

The Overland leaving Adelaide this morning!

This video shows train 5AM8 with Pacific National NR class NR50 heading out of Adelaide Parklands Terminal on 3 September 2026. The locomotive looks a bit grubby as the train crawls away from the terminal, with an announcement warning onlookers away from the platform edge. I’m not usually one to be an early bird, but I was here to see off some friends heading back to Victoria.

Seeing the terminal so empty after the train departed really brought into perspective how much South Australia’s trains changed when regional and intercity trips were moved away from Adelaide railway station into Keswick in the 80s. The facilities looked well equipped to handle the kind of infrequent, often rail-cruise kind of trains that are at this terminal today, but I can’t help but feel that arriving here, a primarily industrial area with no links to the city, makes a poor first impression for travellers coming into Adelaide, especially when other cities are fortunate enough to bring rail travellers straight into the heart of the city.

It’s long been stated by many people that interstate and country trains should return to Adelaide railway station, but with significant costs required to increase capacity (even just for metro trains), interstate travellers will be arriving at Keswick for the foreseeable future.

Seems like a good time to share these historic photos of the BHP Whyalla Tramway with DE class diesel locomotives DE05 - DE03 on a loaded train, including hoppers and also a few tankers at the end. DE05 became 1251 and was last seen stored at African Rail & Traction Services in Pretoria, South Africa, while DE03 underwent rebuild and continued in service until the present day, later known as 1302.

Some more trains on the North line from last Saturday, including The Ghan 4DA8E, Pacific National intermodal 6MP4, SCT intermodal 6MP9, Qube zinc 1503S, Aurizon grain 4176S, and SCT intermodal 5PM9. This day saw a good variety of operators and trains for us to photograph, and the weather was great all day.

With the narrow gauge iron ore trains said to be making their last run in Whyalla today, let’s take a look at the train I saw on my 14 January 2024 visit with Aurizon locomotives 2250 class 2275, 1300 class 1301, and 2262. I’m sure those of us who have photographed this unique, isolated operation will miss seeing these trains throttling back and forth between the mines and the steelworks.

The Fleurieu Peninsula had a good show of South Australian Railways heritage diesel locomotives today! Steamranger brought out SAR 930 class loco 958 on the Highlander after the planned steam power had a fault, 350 class loco 351 was serving its current role as a driving simulator at the Milang Railway Museum, and 830 class loco 844 was travelling along the coast on the Cockle Train. Had some Victorian mates come over for a second attempt at getting The Ghan 4DA8E at Mallala after we left late and missed it last time - as you can tell by the attached photo, it was a great success with NR19 - NR110 hauling the train on a cloudless morning, 29 August 2026.

EDIT: with thanks to commenters, this steam locomotive has been identified as Krauss 3423 ‘Stella’, which worked on sugar cane trains for the Gin Gin Central Milling Co and is seen here in preservation at the former Marsden Museum of Historic Engines in Goulburn, NSW.
