Not every winery operates like a world within a world.

Congratulations to on an incredible result in this year’s wine reviews.

Spending time photographing the estate this year gave me a deeper appreciation for the precision, hospitality and quiet ambition behind what they do.

A special place with a special team.

Our goal has always been to provide simple Italian food to Chapel Street with love,” says Rosa Martelli, who established the South Yarra institution La Lucciola with her husband Sammy in 1980. While Rosa is still a fixture in the kitchen three days a week to ensure her high standards are maintained, the business is now primarily run by her sons Tim and Simon.
Some 43 years later, the small family run business is still renowned for providing authentic home cooked Italian food in a casual and family friendly environment. “Over the years it has fed multiple generations of families, and the cozy ambiance of the establishment makes for a warm and inviting dining experience, perfect for a date night or casual dinner with friends.”
A simple yet charming interior, with comfortable seating and a rustic feel, the establishment’s prime location makes it easily accessible to locals and tourists alike. “And in those warmer summer months, the outdoor seating area is perfect for enjoying a meal on a sunny day.” A hidden gem, La Lucciola Bistro is a fine dining spot that offers authentic Italian cuisine in a welcoming atmosphere.

Anybody who’s ever had a passion for rare vinyls, or wanted to get their hands on hard-earned festival tickets, has undoubt-edly walked through the doors of Greville Records. A staple of the Melbourne music scene for almost 40 years, Greville Records is renowned for having a diverse and extensive collection of new, used and rare records for music lovers of every genre.
Opened in November 1985, the shop was purchased from the original owner by former-employee Warwick Brown in 1991, who still runs the emporium to this day, alongside fellow owner Brunce Milne. “Our business is forever changing, and it has been great to observe the fluctuation of bands of popularity due to trends. For that reason, we stock a bit of everything, and love to have our shop filled with everything and anything.”
For Warwick, Chapel Street has been the perfect place to sustain a successful small business. “People from every walk of life enjoy coming to Chapel Street, there’s always something new, vibrant and different going on. We’ve always had friendly and interest-ing neighbours, who support each other’s businesses. There’s definitely a welcoming home-like feeling every time you’re here.
And with the trend change, it also seems the customer base has increased slightly beyond the metal and techno heads. “The store now is busy with families, kids, teenagers, anyone and everyone who has an interest in music, which we love to see.”

Opening its doors in 1988, Caffe e Cucina has stood through all of Chapel Street’s ups and downs and remains one of the precinct’s most beloved restaurants. Thirty-five years on, it still radiates the same warmth, thick Italian accents, and genuine flavours that transport you straight to Italy.
Created with the vision of recreating the great cafes of Milano, Bologna, Firenze, and Roma, the intimate space is bustling yet cosy. The greeting is always ciao bella, the walls are lined with Italian prints, and every detail feels authentically European. “We’ve always stayed true to our authentic Italian Produzione Artigianale experience,” says owner Arthur Georgiou. “Customers continue to flock through our doors, drawn to melt-in-your-mouth cuisine and our passionate, professional staff.”
The menu is a celebration of Italy’s regions, from creamy Burrata to Tagliatelle al Ragù and Vitello alla Milanese, finished with a classic tiramisu or panna cotta that could send you rolling down Chapel Street. The bar is well stocked, the wine list long—just how the Italians like it.
In the warmer months, tables spill onto the street for alfresco dining, where a glass of wine and a wedge of Parmigiano Reggiano complete the picture. For the family at Caffe e Cucina, Chapel Street is an iconic Melbourne destination with an unmissable vibe from morning to night. “There’s something for everyone on Chapel Street, with its constantly evolving energy, and we look forward to being part of it for years to come.”

Fashion is famous for moving in cycles, and for Arthur Galan, his brand has circled back to its original 90s roots. Opening their first store on Chapel Street in 1998, the boutique was created to complement the workroom around the corner on Wilson Street, where the majority of their collection was created. “We opened the store to even out the peaks and toughs of the seasonal cycles of our manufacturing business, where we produced womenswear for many high-end Australian Designers,” says Galan.
“There was traditionally one month per season where all the production was finished and we had about four weeks down time before we started the next collection. So I thought I would open a boutique menswear store and produce exclusively for that in those two months, which would complement and not conflict with the womenswear we manufactured.
“And so the Arthur Galan AG brand was born.”
The Chapel Street store’s success saw AG boutiques open across the country over the next 17 years, producing their own womenswear collection alongside the menswear. However, 2015 saw the brand go back to where it all started, scaling back to just the South Yarra boutique, focussing solely on menswear head to toe, from sneakers to tuxedos.
Gallan has also seen the many cycles of Chapel Street and is happy to see it returning to its own roots. “I moved into the area 25 years ago and it’s become home on so many levels. I love the boutique stores that are moving back into the street, and I love the exceptional food Chapel Street and its surroundings has to offer.
“Generally the area has a great feeling once again!”

I was commissioned to document the soul of Melbourne’s most iconic strip. From Prahran through Windsor and South Yarra, I photographed the people, businesses, and institutions that have shaped Chapel Street for decades.

The book was designed as both a tribute and a time capsule, portraits of boutique traders, celebrated restaurants, and cultural voices tied in together into a story of resilience, creativity, and community.

Unfortunately, the project was never fully realised. Only a single copy of the book was ever produced.

A rare artefact, but one that still carries the spirit of Chapel Street in every page.

This post marks the beginning of a series where I’ll share the images and stories that never reached the public… until now.
