Opening its doors in 1988, Caffe e Cucina has stood through all of Chapel Street’s ups and downs and remains one of the precinct’s most beloved restaurants. Thirty-five years on, it still radiates the same warmth, thick Italian accents, and genuine flavours that transport you straight to Italy.
Created with the vision of recreating the great cafes of Milano, Bologna, Firenze, and Roma, the intimate space is bustling yet cosy. The greeting is always ciao bella, the walls are lined with Italian prints, and every detail feels authentically European. “We’ve always stayed true to our authentic Italian Produzione Artigianale experience,” says owner Arthur Georgiou. “Customers continue to flock through our doors, drawn to melt-in-your-mouth cuisine and our passionate, professional staff.”
The menu is a celebration of Italy’s regions, from creamy Burrata to Tagliatelle al Ragù and Vitello alla Milanese, finished with a classic tiramisu or panna cotta that could send you rolling down Chapel Street. The bar is well stocked, the wine list long—just how the Italians like it.
In the warmer months, tables spill onto the street for alfresco dining, where a glass of wine and a wedge of Parmigiano Reggiano complete the picture. For the family at Caffe e Cucina, Chapel Street is an iconic Melbourne destination with an unmissable vibe from morning to night. “There’s something for everyone on Chapel Street, with its constantly evolving energy, and we look forward to being part of it for years to come.”
