The Iron K**b Mine
A Marion all electric shovel. Commissioned in June 1965. At a cost $38,000. Taken out of service on 14th Oct. 1981 after digging a total of more than 24 million tons.
It carried its own cable of 3300 volts. and had a bucket capacity of 18 tons.
The Iron K**b Mine, located on the northeastern Eyre Peninsula in South Australia, is widely recognized as the birthplace of the Australian steel industry. First commercially mined in the 1890s, it supplied the high-grade hematite ore (over 60% purity) that underpinned Australia's early industrial economy, including supplying steel used for construction projects like the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
As of January 2025, the Iron K**b mining operations have been placed into care and maintenance.
Despite the production halt, the town remains an active outback heritage site. The Iron K**b Visitor Centre & Museum displays historic mining gear and mineral samples, while local volunteers operate guided bus tours into the historic open-cut pit

Serviceton Railway Station

Serviceton Railway Station sits on the Adelaide–Wolseley line, which was extended from Bordertown, South Australia, on 19 January 1887, coinciding with the opening of the line from Dimboola, Victoria.
When South Australian Premier John Downer suggested naming the new border town after himself, his Victorian counterpart James Service replied that, since it was in Victoria, it would be called Serviceton after him—despite both colonies claiming the land at the time.
As a border station, train crews and locomotives were swapped between the South Australian and Victorian railways, since crews could only work within their own state. A joint customs house and railway station, costing both colonies equally, was built in 1887 and finished in 1889, featuring 15 main rooms, including a large refreshment room. Before Federation, it housed customs facilities and had separate ticket offices for each railway. Customs duties ended in January 1901, but locomotive changes continued into the 1980s.

The Serviceton silo mural captures a pivotal moment in Australia’s history.
Finished in November 2025 by artist Jack Fran, it shows two figures separated by a bold white border line. On the left, a rugged South Australian farmer stands with hands on hips, eyeing the man opposite. On the right, a Victorian surveyor peers through his tripod, plotting a line that would ignite decades of dispute. The eastern border of South Australia was set in 1834 at the 141st degree of east longitude, but in 1847, due to technological limitations, the first survey placed markers in the wrong spot. Both colonies then accepted a border about 2.25 miles (3.62 kilometres) west of the meridian. With no formal agreement, the “neutral ground” became a haven for troublemakers, as police had no jurisdiction until the matter was settled. After seventy-five years of legal wrangling, the Privy Council ruled in 1913-14 that the mistakenly surveyed line would be the official border, placing Serviceton in Victoria.

A surveying error led to ongoing confusion and smuggling until the boundary was legally settled in 1913.

Goroke
The Goroke Silo Art is nestled in amongst the gums in a quaint country town in the Wimera of western Victoria.
The artist was Geoffrey Carran,The 900-square-metre mural of Australian birds on GrainCorp’s decommissioned silos at Goroke Painting began in September 2020 and took about seven weeks to complete. Both the kookaburra and magpie are more than 10 metres high.
I would have shot a few more angles but a flock of Sulphur Crested Cocatoos were quite agitated by the presence of the drone, I completed the shoot as quickly as possible

Coomandook C.A.P.C Hall
The Coomandook Amalgamated Pastimes Club Hall built in 1939.

Used as a state school and a hall for the Parkin Congregational Church until 1970
