Exactly! Maybe it’s time we stop shifting the blame.

Here’s some info from a parliamentary report:

It seems that more information is available about level crossing accidents involving vehicles. Strangely, most fatalities occur in daylight hours, excluding dawn and dusk. A review of data from various sources lead one expert, Dr Peter Cairney, to conclude that approximately 70 per cent of vehicle/train collisions in Australia occur during daylight hours.

Another study suggested that eighty-five percent of accidents occurred in fine weather, eighty-four percent on a dry road, and the road was straight in eighty-nine percent of cases and level in seventy seven percent of cases

Significantly, it has been reported that most crashes occur where the driver has ‘local understanding of the railway level crossing’.

Also significantly the National Railway Level Crossing Safety Strategy reported that 32 per cent of crashes occurred at passive crossings and that 50 per cent occurred at active controlled crossings.

The RTBU has fought for level crossing safety for decades, but any measures that create new dangers for train crews can’t be supported.

That is why the RTBU is urging the Western Australian Liberal and National parties to consult with rail workers, industry and safety experts before proceeding with its Bill, which proposes lighting changes to the Rail Safety National Law.

We have deep respect for the families and advocates who have campaigned for these changes due to horrific and traumatic experiences, and we share in their determination to stop these tragedies from occurring.

Our members are worried about glare, distraction and fatigue - these concerns are the difference between reform that saves lives and one that puts more lives at risk.

The RTBU believes the most effective way to stop deaths at level crossings is to get rid of them; four out of five of our country’s level crossings have nothing more than a sign to protect road users.

Elimination remains our ultimate goal to ensure road users and our members are safe.

3221 sitting outside the Motive Power Centre

The Queensland Rail 2800 class diesel-electric locomotives were introduced in the mid-1990s to haul passenger and freight services on Queensland’s North Coast line between Rockhampton and Cairns, and on the Great Northern line between Townsville and Mount Isa.

The initial order for 40 locomotives was later expanded to 50.

A production mix-up led to the builder’s plates on the final ten locomotives being incorrectly numbered 202–211 instead of 323–332.

One unit was briefly converted to standard gauge in 2006 for interstate use, but noise restrictions prevented operation in New South Wales and it was later returned to narrow gauge service.

In 2013, three locomotives were rebuilt with standard gauge bogies and modified exhaust systems, becoming the 3200 class for interstate operations.

Two sets of railcars crossing at the Millswood loop. The Belair line is a mostly single track broad gauge line on the Adelaide suburban network. These crossing loops allow up and down services to cross. In this video we also get a close up of the point blades moving to allow the down service to continue onwards to Belair.
