2MadPhotographers Netra & Ákos: 2 Mad Photographers - Inspiring a deeper connection with nature through wildlife photography and expert education.
(1)

At 2Mad Photographers, we are passionate about capturing the beauty and complexity of the natural world. Founded in 2017, we are a Sydney-based duo — Ákos Lumnitzer, originally from Hungary, and Netra Chetty, from South Africa — with a shared love for wildlife photography and conservation. With over 50 years of combined experience, our work spans from majestic birds of prey and big cats to delicat

e invertebrates and elusive nocturnal creatures. We believe in the power of photography to tell stories, evoke emotion, and inspire action toward preserving the planet’s fragile ecosystems. Our mission is not only to create breathtaking images but also to empower others to do the same. Through our immersive workshops and engaging presentations, we teach photographers of all levels to refine their techniques while fostering a deeper connection with nature. Ákos’ expertise in ecology and Netra’s background in design and visual arts create a unique blend of scientific insight and creative vision, ensuring a rich learning experience. Whether you’re joining us in the field or attending one of our talks, we aim to inspire ethical practices and a greater appreciation for the natural world.

What did you get up to on the weekend?

We decided late yesterday that we were very much over the rain and just jumped into the car, cameras in tow, and started driving.

No real destination in mind, we cruised around and managed these photographs below that we are pretty pleased with!

Show us your weekend pics!

One of our favourite traditions from the O’Reilly’s workshops is creating a printed coffee table book featuring attendee images from the trip.

Not a PDF.
Not a Dropbox folder nobody opens again.

An actual beautiful keepsake you can hold in your hands.

Every year it becomes this unexpected little time capsule of the experience, the birds, the laughs, the rainforest, the people and the images everyone created together.

Pam, one of our 2025 attendees, summed it up perfectly:
“It’s a lovely souvenir of the experience and a unique outcome from a workshop… and I’ve done a few.”

That feedback honestly means the world to us.

We care deeply about creating workshops that feel thoughtful, personal and genuinely memorable, not just another photography tour.

Here’s a little peek at this year’s book ❤️📖

I've known Troy The Reptile Bloke for 15 years. We met through our love for wildlife and wildlife rescue and have kept in touch over the years. I've always admired his passion for these much maligned creatures, which mirrors my own. Troy does a fantastic job by helping his community relocating snakes and educating the public about how amazing they truly are!

We recently bumped into him and his family at a local reptile show (while I was wearing our Broad-headed snake shirt) and promised to send him a few!

All products in our store have been photographed my either myself or Netra.

What did you get up to on the weekend?

We took a group of enthusiastic photographers on a walk at Nurragingy Reserve Doonside. We were very lucky that so many colourful birds were out and about, including these gorgeous Musk Lorikeets, who were checking out a hollow. Such sweet little birds, with such gorgeous plumage - we managed to get a few shots!

Most people think wildlife photography is all about having the “right” lens.

The truth? It’s more about understanding what each lens actually lets you do.

From those moments when a bird lands far further away than you expected… to the ones where it’s suddenly right in front of you and you’re scrambling to reframe... your lens choice shapes everything.

We’ve broken it down simply:
- what different focal lengths are good for,
- when you’d use them, and
- what really matters when you’re out in the field.

If you’ve ever wondered whether you actually need that 600mm… or if what you already have might be enough... this will help.

JOIN US AT O'REILLY'S IN OCTOBER The first thing to clarify is that, while Netra and I love to photograph birds, this blog post can relate to all wildlife photography. Wild animals have the tendency to stay as far from us as possible and we need similar lenses and camera…

Most people think they’re not ready for something like this.

So they wait.
And wait.
And keep telling themselves “maybe later.”

Not because they can’t do it, but because no one’s shown them how in a way that actually makes sense.

The difference isn’t talent.

It’s having the time, space, and guidance to learn properly.

If this has been sitting in the back of your mind for a while, we wrote a bit more about what it’s actually like.

Not a classroom. Not a workshop where you’re trying to keep up.

This is something different.

Five days in the rainforest. Small group.
Time to actually slow down and learn properly... without the pressure.

Most people don’t need more gear or more experience. They just need the right environment…
and the right guidance.

That’s what this is built around.

If you’ve ever thought about doing something like this, you can take a look at the details.

With our O'Reilly's bird photography workshop approaching this October, I had to remind myself, and I mentioned to Netra, too, that I love photographing all the other critters out there in the rainforest. There are some incredible invertebrates and vertebrates without feathers to capture with our cameras.

Spiders, bugs, snakes, lizards, geckos and other goodies await those who venture out into the night wilderness.

This blog post I wrote about these more unusual creatures may get you excited about visiting this location with us, or on your own. In any case, O'Reilly's and Lamington National Park NEVER disappoint us!
