‘Freedom’
Whilst traveling South & East Coast Australia, I was on the lookout for the largest of the Black Cockatoos, the Yellow Tailed. It would be my first time seeing them in the wild, I was in such awe when it happened, I teared up being in their presence. But something about seeing them in Tasmania & Bruny Island in particular caught my attention. I don’t know if it was hearing their calls whilst being surrounded by nothing else but the natural world, or often seeing them in flight gliding through wide open spaces. I knew I had to include this place in my painting and I knew it had to represent ‘Freedom’. I used a few reference photos of the birds for this piece, the ‘position’ from photos I took on Kangaroo Island & the details from my Tasmania images of the subspecies Zanda funerea xanthanota. I wanted this painting to show how it felt to be there, seeing the golden light dance on their feathers as they landed in the stringy barks on a crisp, cool but sunny summer’s morning at Bruny Island’s Adventure Bay. Their home, their freedom.
