The problem with having access to the latest amazing lenses from Canon ANZ is that I'm sure I need that RF 400 mm 2.8 now...

Thanks so much to Rob from Canon for the advice and support at the Footy Focus AFL Open Immersion Program. I'll keep buying those Lotto tickets!

Here's Payton from the WA Women's Inclusion team, locked in for the grand final against the Allies (NT/TAS/QLD).

Shot with my own Canon r6II and Rob's RF 400 mm 2.8.

PS: I've just uploaded all my images from the three days. You can find them via the client gallery on my website at www.annlord.com.au

During the AFL Open, Michael Lovell from Desolve Images and I were provided with the opportunity to follow a player each, with our images to feature in an AFL Photo Essay.

I spent time with Queensland wheelchair athlete Adele van den Hoek, documenting her time on and off the court, while Michael followed Tasmanian men's inclusion player Lachlan Johannesen, with AFL journalist Phoebe McWilliams interviewing them both for a story.

You can see the result on the AFL website - https://www.afl.com.au/news/1634359/how-a-competitive-nature-has-motivated-adele-van-den-hoek-lachlan-johannesen-on-their-footy-journeys

Queensland were unlucky not to take out the Division 2 Grand Final, beaten by NSW/ACT by just 3 points.

Thanks to Sarah Morton and the AFL Photos team for this experience, and to Adele for being such a wonderful subject.

Deciding on my top 20 images from the AFL Open was a huge task. So many memories and so many great moments across Wheelchair AFL, the Men's and Women's Inclusion games and the Blind and Low Vision exhibition game. What an amazing event to be part of - thanks to Sarah Morton and the AFL Photos team.

I spent much of the three days with the lovely Adele van den Hoek from the Queensland Wheelchair team so Queensland features a fair bit in this post. Western Australia winning the inaugural Women's Inclusion grand final was an absolute highlight of course.

What an incredible week in Melbourne, spending the last few days of my six months of long service leave with the AFL Photos team and some amazing sports photographers from around Australia at the 2026 Toyota AFL Open.

Thanks to Sarah Morton from AFL Photos for your encouragement and the invitation to the Footy Focus X AFL Open immersion experience. It was a dream come true to see you and the team in action and to meet and learn from the AFL photographers I've only ever admired from afar.

Special thanks to Rob from Canon Australia/NZ for allowing us all to borrow some gear. I felt like a kid in a lolly shop!

There are some seriously talented up and coming AFL photographers out there (three of them in our group were under 21) and others who are already making their mark. Everyone brought something to the table and I've walked away with new connections and so many new learnings. Make sure you're following this crew on Instagram - some of them will be shooting at the MCG before you know it (or they'll win Footy Focus 2027).

While I've seen a few WA All Abilities Football games here in WA, the AFL Open is next level, and the most heartwarming experience ever. Seeing the WA Women win the inaugural Women's Inclusion Grand Final was a highlight and the AFL Wheelchair athletes are something else. Most of all, the spirit in which the competition was played is something we can all learn from, with athletes from every state and territory supporting each other.

I'll be sharing some more photos and BTS over the next week or so.

The big question in the C1 Men's League Competition in 2026 was 'could anyone stop the Roo Train'?

Wembley gave the undefeated minor premiers a wake up call in the Second Semi Final, making Wanneroo take the long way to the Grand Final. We all know however that it's that one day in September that counts 🏆.

At half time. Wembley had the lead by 6 points but the second half saw Wanneroo with an early goal and from that point it was all aboard the Roo Train, with a sea of black and white storming the ground on the siren.

Final Score:
Wanneroo 12.7 (79)
Wembley 7.13 (55)

Best on Ground: Cooper Schultz (Wanneroo Amateur Football Club).

Here's the Wanneroo feature, shot for the Perth Football League. Highlights and full gallery of images from the game available via www.annlord.com.au

A night out for me on Monday with the Perth Football League Awards 🏆, as a finalist in the Camera House PFL Image of the Year Award.

Here I am pictured with the other two finalists. From more than 60 submissions, the three images chosen were:

📸 Pack Mark | Grant Lorje,
📸 More Than Footy | Jamie Donald, .donald_photography
📸 Forever Forrestdale | Ann Lord,

Huge congratulations to Jamie who took home a framed copy of his winning image and a $1,000 Camera House voucher.

A special thanks from me to Georgie Manners from the PFL for taking a risk on a newcomer this season, to the amazing collaborative group of PFL photographers and of course to great clubs like Forrestdale for having living legends like Wayne and Blake to capture 🙌🏼.

The season’s not done yet. Can’t wait for Saturday’s Grand Finals at Blue Steel in Bassendean where I’ll be capturing the C1 League GF between Wanneroo and Wembley, followed by the E1 South GF between Maddington and Brentwood Booragoon.

Bring it on 🔥.
