Last Friday was a pretty special night at the Hunter Region Business Excellence Awards.

Coal & Wine Creative was lucky enough to receive Highly Commended in the General Business Category.

The room was packed with around 400 local business people. Founders, teams, operators, creators and hard working people who have all taken a leap in one way or another. It was super inspiring to see the huge scope of businesses doing great things across our region.

Massive thanks to for putting on such a brilliant evening, to for the phenomenal hospitality, and to , who was an absolute highlight as MC.

Very grateful to be part of this business community and excited to keep building.

Like Adam’s work, hopefully this film feels like it was made by hand.

It’s not polished to absolute perfection.

A lot of it was filmed by just following Adam around while he worked. In the shed. In the paddock. Around horses, grinders, welders, chainsaws, dogs, chickens, wind, you name it.

We tried proper sit-down interviews, but it just didn’t feel right. Too clinical. Too formal. Too… I don’t know?

It definitely made it harder. The audio was a nightmare at times.

But it was better.

More honest. More natural. More him.

Less a Q&A and more musings, meditations and a fair bit of rambling.

I think piece carries a bit of that. It has some patina. A few jagged edges. A bit of dust and rust.

Hopefully that’s what makes it feel human.

JUSTIN FROM TEGAMI MOTORCYCLES APPRECIATION POST 🏍️🔥

A massive thank you to and .moto for everything he did to help bring The Gang to life.

Justin put in a huge amount of time, effort and energy behind the scenes. Late nights fitting tow bars, fixing bikes, getting them ready.

He didn’t just help out himself. He leaned on mates, called in favours, rallied people together and helped make all the riding scenes happen.

Thanks to all the legends who came out on the day, giving up their valuable time to dress in pink and do a few laps.

Justin went above and beyond just to help a creative vision come to life and it’s appreciated beyond what words can express.

When you’re making something like this, people like Justin are the difference between an idea staying in your head and it actually making it onto screen.

So grateful for the support, generosity and belief in the project.

Thanks Justin, I couldn’t have done it without you.

The Gang is out now.

How I found Mads is probably best not repeated, but let’s just say it involved a pretty hilarious post from 🚽

I needed a producer and Mads seemed like the perfect fit. Funny how timing works. We met on the Friday, had a pub feed, talked about the script, and Mads specifically mentioned Tropfest. Then on the Monday they announced it was back after 6 years away. It felt meant to be.

From there, we just chipped away at bringing The Gang to life.

I knew Mads was an actor, but it took me an embarrassingly long time to think, “por qué no los dos?” Can she produce and play Jaz? Thankfully, she said yes, and we were off.

Mads was so much more than just the actor playing Jaz. She was a sounding board, a voice of reason, and a massive part of getting this thing made. She helped produce it, shape it, and keep it moving whenever it needed that extra push.

She brought so much to the role and to the film as a whole, and I’m really grateful she came on board.

The Gang is out now.

Bringing Chris Combes .combes on as Murray was the point where The Gang really came to life.

From early on, Chris brought a level of thought and detail to the character that completely elevated what was on the page. I still remember one of our first conversations about Murray. Chris asked me a question, I gave him my answer, and then he shared how he saw the character. Straight away I realised he was right. He understood something about Murray that I hadn’t fully seen yet.

That’s one of the best parts of working with an actor like Chris. You hand over the character, and suddenly they become more real, more specific, more human.

Chris built out backstory, instincts and little character details that went far beyond what was written. At times it honestly felt like *The Gang* could have been a pilot for something much bigger, just following Murray, because there was so much depth in what Chris was bringing to him.

And then there were the small moments on set. The bits of improvisation. Tiny physical choices that weren’t scripted, like putting his hand on the bike during the hug, that just made everything feel more lived in and true.

Very grateful to have had Chris bring Murray to life in this film. He gave the character weight, history and heart, and The Gang is far better for it.

My short film “The Gang” didn’t make the final cut for this year.

That might sound like a bummer, but it’s not.

I’m really bloody proud of this film.
So stoked with how it came together as a guerrilla operation shot over a weekend with mates.
For it to be preselected and beat out some other 400 odd films was amazing in itself.

I just want to say a massive thank you to everyone who’s asked about The Gang, followed along, or sent messages over the past few months. It genuinely meant a lot.

An even bigger thank you to the people who made the thing with me —
, .combes , .moto, , Peter McDonagh, , and all the amazing extras who jumped in, gave up a weekend, and backed the idea.

It was so much fun and really cemented that this is what I want to do. Can’t wait to do it again…. Soon.

The film’s still under embargo for now, but I can’t wait to share it when I’m allowed to.
