‘The Ocean Within’ is part of a series of fine art prints exploring the relationship between women and the natural environment, considering how identity and place intersect. While landscapes are often imagined as spaces of freedom and escape, women may experience them differently, shaped by concerns around safety, accessibility and social expectations. Layered imagery conveys both belonging and restriction, symbolizing how environments can shape our sense of self.

Digital collage/montage using unique imagery from my antique and vintage collections combined with my original photographs. Made using: Adobe Photoshop, Nikon DSLR and an Epson flatbed scanner.

Blue Mountains & South Coast flying visit.
Took the new EV on its first interstate trip to see the folks. 2800km. Absolute dream to drive.

1. Lunch stop at Cafe Niagara in Gundagai on the way up to the Mountains. All the nostalgic vibes!

2. We stayed at the Victoria & Albert Guest House in Mount Victoria. Super comfy, great breakfast and gorgeous historical curiosities decorating every corner of this grand old building first established in 1867.

3. Govetts Leap Blackheath

4-5. Took my Dad to the biggest concert he’s ever attended! Figured I may as well see Noah Kahan again. It would have been rude not to seeing as we were both in Sydney. Life is for grand adventures after all! Walking to the venue a giant butterfly flew by. ‘The Last of the Bugs’ indeed 🦋

6. Lots of family history chats with my Mum and a lovely visit to see my Uncle and Aunt. I became the temporary custodian of a few more treasures (more on that to come). This is a teeny tiny photo of my Great Aunt Dorothy and Great Uncles David and Douglas.

7. Cuttagee Beach

8-9. The Wharf Local in Tathra. One of my favourite places on earth. I could sit in this cafe forever.

10. Kites for Gaza event up on the headland above us.

11. Southern migration in full swing. Whales heading back to Antarctica (viewed from Bermagui) 🐳

12-13. Whales at Tathra Headland (love that sound! So close to the shore!) 🐋

14. I purchased some incredible treasures on this trip. I will be posting about them soon. Alas this beauty was sadly not for sale. (Spotted in ‘Strangers in Paradise’ in Bermagui)

15. Flowers on food seemed to be an ongoing theme. Highly recommend Cafe Pambula and Eden Ground by Toast. Yum and gorgeous service at both locations!

16. Clifftop in Eden (while we watched yet more whales frolic in the bay.)

17. Journey home. Restrooms at Cann River. 🌸🌷🌼

I haven’t had much reading time lately with another exhibition deadline looming, but my book stack has grown in readiness for some downtime! I think I will be well prepped if we ever have some kind of digital blackout 😳

Making the most of the free/cheap Vinted postage over the past month to celebrate its launch in Australia (I am having way too much fun 😂) and some good finds at my favourite Savers (what else is new!). I always discover things I have never heard of or seen before when perusing secondhand book stocks. It’s very cathartic too. The lovely ‘book guy’ at our local Savers (hi Michael!) always has the shelves well stocked. It’s rare I don’t walk out with a book.

Speaking of bookshops have Melburnians seen Kinokuniya is opening in Melbourne Central!!! Dangerous! (No need to go to Sydney anymore….KIDDING!!)

‘Cats Rule the Earth Tarot’ (wrapped new in box so no bad vibes) I could not resist a squiz at the card designs by Brazilian artist Thiago Correa. Also can never resist a bargain. (My excuse is always ‘my girls would love this’ 😂)

‘Light and Love: The Extraordinary Developments of Julia Margaret Cameron and Mary Hillier’ Kirsty Stonell Walker, a gorgeous fully illustrated book I cannot wait to read. Julia Margaret Cameron (d.1879) is a famous victorian portrait photographer and I have long been captivated by her images.

‘Nothing New: A History of Second-hand’ Robyn Annear

‘A Room Made of Leaves’ Kate Grenville. Again the blurb sucked me straight in. Historical fiction, the imagined memoir of Elizabeth Macarthur.

‘Destroying the Joint’ Various, edited by Jane Caro

‘The Ophelia Girls’ Jane Heale. With a blurb that says: ‘In the summer of 1973, teenage Ruth and her four friends are obsessed with pre-Raphaelite paintings…’ it went straight in my basket!

‘The Mistress of Paris’ Catherine Hewitt. A biography of Valtesse de La Bigne a celebrated nineteenth-century Parisian courtesan.

‘May Gibbs: Mother of Gumnuts’ Maureen Walsh. I already have this one in a boxed set but was bamboozled by it being a different format/size and cover.

A recent purchase, this fun little Victorian book, ‘The Querist’s Album and Autograph Book’, only small at approx 90x120mm and published in Glasgow by David Bryce & Son c1890.

Features an extensive 36 questions per entry starting with “what virtue do you most esteem?” and finishing with “my confession”, all answered anonymously.

I’m having fun reading through this one! A real snapshot of the era with a lot of focus on who to marry. My favourite question is “Your favourite amusement” with answers including: ‘counting the stars’
‘roller skating & dancing’
‘flirting’
‘sewing and fancy work’
‘reading and gardening’
‘football and cricket’
‘talking to children’
‘looking at houses’
‘teasing people’
‘playing at cards for kisses’
‘waltzing with the one you like best’

Yellow Tailed Black Cockatoos spotted in the Melbourne Cemetery a couple of weeks ago. Just a stones throw from the city! With an appropriate scientific name ‘Zanda Funerea’ (thanks Steve!).
