I’ve wanted to add gold leaf to cyanotypes for ages, I knew the blue would look so good with the gold.

After making these lacey-framed-cyanotypes works at the start of the week I had the brilliant idea to finally put this into practice, and on a whim went out and bought everything I needed to get gilding.

I’m certainly going to need some practice, it’s a little rough around the edges. It still looks pretty good though right? Or am I crazy? I think I’m onto something here.

The two loves of my life.

I think I’m onto a winner here. Using up the last of the leftover paper from the weekends Cyanotype workshop, I took a couple of test ideas from earlier in the week and combined them and I think what I envisioned with these ideas finally came into fruition.

By splitting up the cyanotypes and creating a collage at the end, it allows me to control the exposures of all the elements seperately so that you don’t sacrifice print quality. I think it looks kinda cool in the frame too!

For edge to edge coverage, you can’t beat this technique.

I’m not sure where I picked this up from, but it was ‘back in the day’ - I’m guessing the Christopher James Alt processes book or the classic archive of tutorials.

The idea behind it is to coat the paper fibres from every direction while also removing excess chemistry, don’t be afraid to make a mess. The end result will be a perfectly even coating, but hey, if you like the more whacky approaches then don’t let me stop you!

There’s one thing wrong with this diagram, can anyone guess what it is?

Besides the mistake, this is my go to setup for flower photography.

Two stripboxes for rim light, a light on a black background and a beauty dish for key.

If you want to learn some more tips for photographing flowers, come along to my workshop next week with EP Group on the 22nd May. Bookings via the Sony Scene website.

Chandler approves this message.

I was really stuck in the bean bag today and pulled myself out to test something I’d been thinking about for a few days. I think there’s real potential in these ornamental frames with cyanotypes, maybe a new workshop idea?

The best part of a Polaroid lift isn’t the end result.

I love the look of Polaroid lifts, but once they are dry they feel so static, once again constrained. It’s when the emulsion is floating that the photo is at its most interesting, whether it’s as it separates from the other layers or while it warps during the transfer.

Polaroid Lift in D Flat Major.

The main reason I like Polaroid lifts isn’t for the final result, it’s this part here - watching the image distort and dissolve as the emulsion sits in the boiling water.

Some new experiments with Polaroid lifts onto perspex frames.

I found these frames while going through some old boxes of art bits and bobs, and thought they’d be perfect to try doing a Polaroid lift to.

I really wanted to strip the photo of anything referential in these experiments so I could just focus on the form created through the lift, and I think the result is a great example of concrete photography - something exciting for a conceptual photography nerd like me!

Third time lucky with this Polaroid emulsion lift to a perspex frame.

I’ve been toying around with this for the last couple of days and slowly adjusting my technique to get these transfers working well, it’s definitely different sticking the emulsion to perspex rather than paper. But I’m getting close to something exciting I think, particularly with the coloured ‘forms’, which are a great example of concrete photography (something exciting for a conceptual photography nerd like myself).
