Most days I like to play with colours.
Some days I’d use a bit of lemon, ochre and, mustard,
And some days I’d paint with crimson, ruby and, coral.
When I feel like trying blue, green and turquoise,
I also dip my brushes into purple, vanilla, and orange.

Art in the City of Joy

Kolkata is often nicknamed as the City of Palaces because of its historical buildings and monuments which are homes to neoclassical architectures, Greek, Baroque and Roman designs, Islamic architectures incorporated with Gothic elements, Ionic-Corinthian styles and what not.

When I learnt about Indranil Halder’s recent visit to Anant Art curated by Naya Anjor at Anant Art Gallery, Center for Contemporary Arts, Bikaner House, New Delhi, India, I delved into the creative approaches exhibited by the participating artists such as Aban Raza, Madhu Das and Vikrant Bhise.

A range of questions sprawled from the notes we exchanged on the role and future of art activism in India and the vigil against ecological and socio-economic struggles that exist in different parts of the country.

My relationship with the city of Kolkata is more than umbilical. There are so many emotions emanating from my memories, lessons and experiences over various phases of life. Stories evolved from how my parents and grandparents treated life, the evolution of food, fashion, culture and history and how its past, present and future unfolded.
However, a recent discussion about KALIKATAH and its secrets made me question our level of knowledge and ignorance. Many thanks to Indranil Bengal Halder for this idea of awareness, for tirelessly helping out with the research for this story and for adding in some extremely valuable information about the city’s historical and political background - A truth that hid away for decades…

A recent tête-à-tête with Indranil Halder and a coffee time adda (আড্ডা - a Bengali term for relaxed conversations about random topics) over the book, Calcutta Then Kolkata Now by Sunanda K.
