Halfway between Hanoi and Ha Long Bay, our bus pulled over at a workshop full of hands moving faster than I could focus on. Silk thread, hand stretched frames, and years of practice in every stitch. Didn't plan to shoot here. Glad I did.

Kuala Lumpur, looking straight up from a back alley. A red shirt on the line. A mattress rolled up against the rail. Bars on every window, aircon boxes bolted on wherever they'd fit, wires knotted overhead going nowhere in particular. One wall over: a dark glass tower, clean lines, brand new. Same street, two different worlds. This is the side of the city not all see. People getting on with life, right in the middle of everything going up around them. Shot this on the Z8.

Another happy customer. Stopped at this stall for coconuts, walked away with a portrait instead. Camera comes up, he's straight into it: thumbs up, big grin, didn't even ask why. Durians hanging behind him, coconuts stacked in the foreground, the whole market going off around us. This is what keeps pulling me back to these markets. Everyone's up for it. Half the vendors are posing before I've even raised the camera.

Red lanterns strung overhead, the Bak K*t Teh sign lit up behind rows of red-clothed tables, satay smoke drifting off the grill into the crowd. Everyone eating, everyone walking, no one rushing. This is what a KL night food street actually looks like once the sun's down.

I was trying to photograph a guy getting off a bar stool in Kuala Lumpur. Dragged the shutter, missed the moment completely, and ended up with this. Gold light streaking against cold blue, a blurred figure caught in between. The missed shot turned into the better one. Some of my favourite shots start as mistakes.

Old Quarter, Hanoi. This woman's pushing a bike loaded with peanuts straight through the middle of the street, past Mad Monkey and a row of tour desks, motorbikes lined up along the curb like always. A tourist stops to watch her go by. Everyone else just carries on. Flat grey sky, no shadows to fight, which is exactly how I like shooting this street. The light does nothing flashy and lets the scene speak for itself.

Ha Long Bay does the lighting for you. Overcast sky, soft light bouncing off the water, no shadows to fight. Client leaning on the rail with that limestone skyline behind her, didn't need to direct much beyond 'stay right there.' This is why I like shooting travel portraits on the water over land shoots. The boat gives you a natural frame every time.

Cataract Gorge, Launceston. Wasn't after this one, just stopped and stared at it for a minute. The water surface was doing this swirling, almost oil-slick pattern, no rocks or rapids in sight, just the water itself moving in these loops. Shot on my phone, converted to mono. Sometimes black and white is the only way to actually see a pattern like this, the colour was just noise.
