Winter mornings at MacMasters Beach ❄️🌅

There's something special about a clear winter sunrise. The air is crisp, the ocean is calm, and the first hints of red slowly spread across the sky, reflecting like a mirror in the still waters of the rock pool.

It's a quiet kind of beauty—no drama, just soft light, perfect reflections, and the promise of another day on the coast. Mornings like these are always worth the early start.

Exploration often leads to the best compositions 🌊

While wandering along the rock shelf, I stumbled across this narrow channel as the incoming tide began to fill it. Each new wave cascaded over the rocks, creating beautiful lines and movement that seemed to improve with every set.

It was one of those locations that only exists for a short window. With a decent swell rolling through, I knew I couldn't stay long before the ocean reclaimed the platform. By high tide, this entire scene would be underwater.

That's one of the things I love most about coastal photography—the landscape is constantly changing, and sometimes the best compositions are only there for a few fleeting moments.

Behind every seascape is a pair of wet boots... 🌊📷

The first image captures the waves spilling across the Avoca rock shelf, creating the flowing patterns I was hoping for. Swipe across to see the second photo, taken by my mate Brian ( .photography_ ), showing what it looked like from behind the camera.

With water constantly surging around my lower legs, every wave needed watching. It's a good reminder that while seascapes can look calm in a photo, the conditions on a rock platform can change in an instant. A good pair of rock spikes makes all the difference, providing the grip and confidence to stay stable on the slippery surface.

The photo is always the goal... but getting home safely is far more important.

First light at Catherine Hill Bay 🌅

Sheltered inside one of the sea caves, I watched the first glow of dawn appear on the horizon, perfectly framing the old jetty beyond. The dark cave walls created a natural window to the scene, drawing the eye toward a structure that has stood against the elements for generations.

These are the moments I love most — arriving in the dark, exploring the coastline, and finding a composition that tells a story as the day begins.

Back to Somersby Falls after the rain 💧🌿

A little rain can make a big difference. The falls were flowing nicely, bringing fresh life to the creek and adding a sense of movement to the surrounding forest. With the rocks glistening and the air carrying that unmistakable scent of wet bushland, it felt like nature had hit the reset button.

Sometimes the best landscapes aren't found at sunrise — they're hidden beneath the canopy, waiting for the rain to bring them to life.

A peaceful start to the day at Berkeley Vale 🌸

Before sunrise, wispy pink clouds drifted across the sky and reflected perfectly in the still waters of the lake. With barely a ripple on the surface, the scene felt calm, quiet, and almost symmetrical — one of those mornings where nature does all the work.

The softest light often arrives before the sun itself, rewarding those willing to be there early enough to see it.

Predawn colour at MacMasters Beach 🌅

Venturing beyond the main rock pool, I found another pocket of water perfectly positioned to catch the incoming waves. As the tide filled the pool, the sky began to glow with deep reds and pinks, while the last of the storm clouds drifted away to the north.

One of those mornings where the weather couldn't quite decide whether to stay dramatic or give way to a beautiful sunrise. Fortunately, it delivered a bit of both.

Morning light at the Oyster Shed 🌅

As the sun rose over Brisbane Waters, the first light painted the clouds and drifting fog in soft shades of red and gold. Mist lingered over the distant hills while the still waters reflected the colours of a new day, creating one of those peaceful scenes that seems to slow time itself.

It's mornings like these that make getting out before dawn worthwhile.

Before sunrise at North Avoca 🌊

A dark, brooding sky hung overhead while a thin strip of gold lit the horizon, hinting at the day to come. Below, waves spilled over the rock shelf in slow motion, creating patterns that seemed to change with every set.

As tempting as it was to get closer to the edge, the ocean had plenty of power behind it. Sometimes the best decision is to take a step back and enjoy the scene from a safer vantage point. No photograph is worth testing a rogue wave.

A fiery start to the day at Gravelly Beach 🔥🌅

As the sky exploded with colour, I was focused on the reflections and the unfolding sunrise when a local dog wandered into the scene. Rather than passing through, he stopped right in front of me and gazed out across the water, seemingly just as captivated by the morning as I was.

Sometimes the best element in a landscape isn't part of the plan. A perfect reminder to slow down and enjoy the view.
