Something new from Mellen Burns and me! 💫

Happy World Photography Day everyone!

We (Mellen Burns and Melissa Drummond) have taken a little leap and are excited to share the beginning of something new - Wild West Foto Fest, a year-long celebration of regional photography here in Kalgoorlie-Boulder.

It’s an idea that’s grown out of many conversations about photography and life in the Goldfields, and will unfold over the next year as a series of small events and skill-sharing opportunities - from photo walks and workshops to talks and exhibitions. It’s all about celebrating photography as a way to connect, learn, and see our region in new ways.

We’re kicking off this Saturday with a Landscapes and Light Painting workshop hosted by Tari from Dusty Road Imagery. Tickets are $30 and you can grab one via the link https://events.humanitix.com/landscapes-and-light-painting-with-dusty-road-imagery

Between day jobs, families, and volunteer commitments, this will grow slowly and sustainably, but we’re excited about what’s possible, and we’d love others to join in. Please follow along and get in touch if you’d like to be involved.

Every now and then, something interesting pops up on the often-cursed local facebook marketplace.

In 2022, I came across a Fujica G690 - a cumbersome medium format rangefinder sometimes known as a Texas Leica.

A couple of years earlier, in August 2020, I bought a Mamiya C3. WA’s borders had closed that March and were still shut. The man selling the Mamiya had a family emergency and needed to get back to Taiwan. Flights were insanely expensive, so he was selling some of his possessions. I could tell it hurt to let go of the camera - it was in beautiful condition - and I felt a bit guilty buying it, even though the money was helping him get home.

It took me ages to finish a couple of test rolls, but I was excited to see the results. Despite the weight of the Fujica and my worries about being able to hold it steady, I’m pretty happy with how things turned out. As a testament to me being a massive idiot, I somehow shot a whole roll on the Mamiya without exposing any film…and I still have no idea how.

Needless to say, this photo is from the Fujica. Stay tuned for some Mamiya shots…once I figure out how to use it properly.
