From travellers passing through town to locals gathering for a meal, a drink or a celebration, the old Shire Hall Hotel has watched the town change around it while remaining a familiar sight on the streetscape.

Before modern council offices, decisions that shaped the district were made right here.

Built in 1888, the historic Lowan Shire Hall served as the municipal offices for the old Lowan Shire for more than 70 years before local government operations moved elsewhere in 1962.

Today, the building continues to preserve local history as the home of the Nhill and District Historical Society.

A reminder that some of our most important local stories are still standing right in front of us.
