I tried for a top 5, I really did, but I had to make it a top 6 with the understanding that none of my images of people are included, I do photograph people as well but tend not to include them in my social media, if you want to see my people portraits I do have some on my portfolio on my website - jmastudios.com.au.
I learnt from looking back that the best photos arenβt always the ones I am setting up, by keeping my eyes open I catch moments and perspectives that I might have missed if I didnβt stay aware. The goofy looks and interactions, or the subject that wasnβt going to be in the planned photoshoot can step up and be the star of the gallery. The chestnut horse was pulled out of the paddock last minute, the dark horse profile was during the acclimatisation phase - getting the horse used to the flash, the brown and white bull dog came in after the horse model wasnβt really working but he stole the show, and the brown and white collie was holding that sweet pose in a group shot, looking so endearing I zoomed in on him. Keep my eyes open!
The foal is a foal, of course I had to have a foal in my top 5(6), everything went right for that photo, right light, right background, right expression and a little flick of the tail, who can resist a foal photo, right?
And my favourite, the rim-lit horse looking straight at the camera is my very favourite as this is a photo I have been trying to get and at last success! Perfect balance, highly directional light picking out the facial features. Dramatic!
So now for 2026 β who knows what adventures will come this year but I am planning on more ponies, more pets, more poeple, and more looking for the fun and beautiful in the world :)
