This video post from “Alastair’ on YouTube very much sums up how I have felt for quite some time now and it is a very interesting observation.
I’m fully aware that I too have previously fallen into the trap of chasing “Likes”, “Followers” and an audience on Social Media for my creative side, as well as putting myself through the angst (and expense) of exhibiting and gallery representation - at the expense of creating just for the pure joy of it.
But over the last year or so I have decided to take a step back and returned to just doing creative things that I enjoy - without the pressure or need to try and monetise, exhibit or compare to others.
I no longer try to sell work or exhibit, I have taken down my website, and the only reason I occasionally still share work on social media these days is to try and spread a positive vibe, in a hopeless attempt to desaturate the all the negativity, propaganda and junk that is on there.
I encourage you to take up hobbies that you enjoy for the sake of your own sanity and ignore the need or pressure to please anyone else
How we grindified our downtime and why your hobbies don't owe you anything.
