π ALBERT TOGNOLINI REST AREA (WA)
Just off the Great Northern Highway, you'll find this free camp with a spectacular view. π
But have you ever wondered who Albert Tognolini was and why this beautiful spot bears his name?
Albert Henry Tognolini was a Western Australian engineer who dedicated almost 41 years of his life to the Main Roads Department of WA, eventually becoming its Commissioner.
He played an important role in the development of WA's road network, particularly in the remote Kimberley and Pilbara regions. He was involved in the planning, route selection and construction of sections of the Great Northern Highway (which you can see in this photo), helping to connect some of our most remote communities.
And here's something we thought was pretty special⦠Albert was also involved in the development of the iconic Gibb River Road!
The Gibb was originally constructed as a beef road to connect remote cattle stations with the ports of Derby and Wyndham. We spent three weeks travelling the Gibb River Road earlier this year - it's pretty incredible to think about the people who helped make these journeys possible.
Albert's work with Main Roads helped shape the roads that we now get to explore on our own outback adventures.
So next time you're pulling up at Albert Tognolini Rest Area, take a moment to appreciate the history behind the name. β€οΈ
And, of course, soak up that view!
