We often admire the grooves of a mountain, the scars of a tree and the ripples of the sea. Yet when it comes to our own textures and shapes, we hesitate. Bri’s story — one of survival — is a reminder that, just like nature, our bodies hold stories. And every story is worthy. I met almost 4 years ago when she came to this very room to help me take photos of a swimwear brand. I knew I really wanted to ask about her scars but I had no idea how to navigate that conversation without making her feel uncomfortable or offended. I have this deep curiosity to know the journey and the experiences of every woman I photograph. I was immediately drawn to the texture and beauty of Bri’s incredible scars and the stories they told, however I didn’t want her to feel like that was the sole reason I was photographing her. For anyone that knows Bri, you’ll know she’s the most resilient, intelligent and approachable human being you’ll ever meet. She was so willing to share her story with me and we clicked instantly. It just made sense that the first person I photographed since July 2022 was her.

Today I got my period.

I remember the early days when I first got my period. I was incredibly embarrassed by it. Not only was I the oldest in my grade, I was the first to get my period and I did everything I could to hide that fact. Back then there were no period wear companies and tampons were scary when you’re barely a teenager. I remember going to a pool party with a bunch of girl friends and wearing board shorts with a bikini and pad underneath.

I’ve heard colleagues talk about how exciting their daughters have found it getting their first period — how swimming is no issue because you can get period swimwear now as well!!! It honestly makes me feel rather sad for my younger self. She didn’t have that positive experience and it took years — probably until Grade 10 or 11 — to feel more confident. My mum also tried everything to help me embrace it in those early days but it was so taboo. Did anyone else have the same experience?

*I don’t typically wear a pad with a thong (big panties allllll the way) but I wanted to highlight periods in a more obvious way for this concept
