A Caspian tern (Hydroprogne caspia) taking off with a flounder from the estuary. It flew about 50m then dropped it. Not sure the fish would have swam to freedom though, the lower beak had skewered it behind the head! Peel estuary, Western Australia.

ANZAC day Sea eagle and Fish eagle flyby... shakedown... then aerial battle. Peel estuary.
I'd just gotten out of the car when I noticed so many things going on - pelicans feeding, fish jumping, a huge flock or cormorants, stingrays flapping in the shallows, then an Osprey flew past holding a fish. My camera wasn't properly set up (after lightning photography on Tuesday) but I got the telephoto on and grabbed a couple of frames.....then I noticed something much bigger enter the fray. The White-bellied sea eagle chased down the Osprey until it dropped its half eaten fish, but then it sunk and the eagle couldn't retrieve it. The osprey was p****d! It spent the next few minutes attacking the sea eagle, whose defence is to toll onto its back. Got my camera got set up in between attacks, but they remained far away, about 200m or so. Still grabbed some nice images of the battle though.

Some of these were soooo bright, retina searing but very quick flashes, I had no idea there were bolts in there until I checked the back of the camera. Unusual as far as WA lightning goes. I had to decrease ISO and close the aperture so they didn’t blow out.

A couple of bolts from last nights storms from South Bunbury. The storms were well out to sea but then the rain came in and in quick succession BOOM these hit a few km away. Check out the cargo ship in the bottom right corner, dwarfed by the towering bolt. The completely blown out one made me rethink my life choices, and I scarpered quickly to my car from the tin roofed picnic shelter!

Leichhardt’s grasshopper (Petasida ephippigera). This amazing looking insect occurs in a small area, living and feeding on Pityrodia shrubs on the escarpments of Arnhem Land. They appear when the wet season begins and to the Indigenous people of the Western Arnhem Land they are ‘Alyurr’, a child of the lightning man Namarrkon,

Welcome swallow (Hirundo neoxena). They were congregating in huge numbers in the reed beds next to the Peel estuary last week, getting their fill from the millions of midges that were hatching and producing huge swarms that spiraled above the tree tops.
