Not a bird (who could have predicted this)! And not something you see in Sydney every day 🐍

It’s a Red-naped Snake (Furina diadema), a species that’s highly secretive and spends much of its time underground!

Great to get up close and personal with a few of these critters with some wonderful people who know how to handle them in the field.

Last month, the first Roseate Tern (Sterna dougallii) ever recorded in Sydney turned up at Long Reef. As a personal 'lifer', this bird convinced me to take a detour on my way to work. Not to mention I couldn't resist the opportunity to take my new gear for a spin!

Great to catch up with some equally enthusiastic twitchers, and stoked to spend time with this bird alongside some other cool marine life in this amazing spot 😍

Getting up close and personal with three Ground Parrots at Beecroft Peninsula was well worth the 4am wake-up.
Great seeing and and meeting some new faces, all equally stoked with such incredible views of these usually mythical creatures.

Because it’s World Albatross Day, here’s a Sooty Albatross.
I was lucky enough to encounter this endangered species on a memorable pelagic trip off Eaglehawk Neck, Tasmania back in 2016.

Crimson Sunbird

One of the many spectacular birds seen in the Himalayan foothills. In winter, many of the local birds migrate to lower altitudes to escape the cold. I don't blame them!

Mallee Emu-wren

A bird found in a very small part of Australia, in mallee spinifex habitat. That is, in really spikey grass! These endangered birds weigh only 6.5 grams and are tricky to track down unless you can hear their insect-like call. This one was found in Hattah-Kulkyne National Park, Victoria.

South Island Takahē

For half the twentieth century, this flightless bird was thought to be extinct. I've wanted to see one ever since I was a kid, and had the privilege on a trip to New Zealand a little while ago, with great company.
