There is something particularly beautiful about watching a family simply be a family.

No grand occasion. No perfectly orchestrated moments. Just an afternoon beneath the trees, with children running wild, little arms reaching for cuddles, and grandparents soaking up every moment.

For the Nagel family, this afternoon was made even sweeter by having family visiting all the way from South Africa.

Because when oceans separate the people you love, the ordinary moments together become anything but ordinary.

The way a grandfather holds his grandson. The way a little girl folds herself into her dad’s arms. The laughter, the affection, the familiar comfort of being surrounded by your people.

One day, these photographs will be more than a reminder of how everyone looked.

They’ll be a reminder of what it felt like to all be together.

And what a privilege it was to capture a little piece of that.

There’s something about the way a family looks against an endless sky.

The little legs relishing the chance to be the leader. The hands that still reach for yours. The beautiful, fleeting chaos of being right here, in this chapter of life.

No faces to study, no details to distract. Just the shape of a family, exactly as they are, in a moment that will never come around quite the same way again.

One day, those little legs will take longer strides, those hands won’t reach quite so often, and life will look a little different.

But for now, they are here.

Together.

Little beneath a great big sky.

~ Danica & Lucas ~

There is something rather extraordinary about being invited back into someone’s story.

The first time I photographed these two, they were engaged. Two people in love, standing somewhere between the life they knew and the beautiful unknown of everything still to come.

Then came their wedding.

The dress, the promises, the laughter, and all those little moments that make a day feel like it might last forever, even as it slips through your fingers.

And now, here we are again.

Only this time, there is someone else in their story. Someone they haven’t met yet, but already love more than words could possibly explain.

A little person who will one day look at these photographs and see their parents before they became Mum and Dad.

Before the sleepless nights. Before the tiny fingers wrapped around theirs. Before they knew the face of the person who would change their world.

And I think there’s something incredibly beautiful about that.

Because I’ve watched these two grow from an engaged couple, to husband and wife, to a family waiting to meet its newest little love.

Different chapters. The same two people. A love that keeps finding new ways to grow.

One day, their baby might look through these photographs alongside their engagement and wedding galleries and discover that their family’s story began long before they arrived.

And that they were so very loved before they were ever born.

What a privilege it is to be invited into these moments. Not just once, but again and again, as life unfolds.

Danica and Lucas, thank you for letting me keep another little piece of your story.

Twenty years ago, Sasha and Clancy promised each other a lifetime but the photographs never quite captured the beginning.

So they returned, not to recreate who they were, but to honour who they became.

Two decades of ordinary days and weathered seasons. Of choosing, changing, forgiving and growing. Of two lives slowly, beautifully fading into one another.

These aren’t the wedding photographs they missed.

They’re the love story that came after.

There are places that seem to exist outside of time.

Beneath a canopy of ancient trees, where roots weave through the earth like old stories and sunlight filters gently through the leaves, a family slows down.

No grand adventure unfolds. No perfectly posed moments. Just the quiet rhythm of being together.

A blanket becomes an island. A picture book becomes a journey. Little hands reach for familiar faces. Parents steal glances at one another while children explore, cuddle, laugh and inevitably interrupt every carefully planned photograph.

The beauty of childhood has never been found in stillness. It lives somewhere between curiosity and comfort, between wild laughter and sleepy embraces.

Years from now, it won’t be the perfect smiles they’ll come back for. It will be the favourite storybook. The little arms wrapped tightly around a neck. The enormous trees that made them all feel small. The ordinary afternoon that quietly became unforgettable.

That’s why I photograph families.

Because one day, these moments become the ones we would give anything to visit again.

Some things are never really about the occasion.

They are about the people.

The woven mats rolled out beneath the trees. The hands that have held generations. The treasured objects that quietly carry the stories of those who came before. The meals shared without hurry. The conversations that needed no audience.

Families are rarely simple. They are stitched together with history, resilience, forgiveness, laughter, grief and love often all at once.

What an honour it was to stand quietly on the edge of this gathering and witness the things that remain.

Because long after the day itself has passed, these are the moments that become part of a family’s story.

Some sessions feel less like photographs and more like memory made visible.

Eliza, Lachy and little Florence, at home in the golden light. Bare feet, baby giggles, dogs underfoot, and the soft chaos of family life unfolding exactly as it should.

I have photographed Eliza through so many pivotal seasons, and every time I do, I feel it — that beautiful ache of nostalgia. Her mum, my Aunty Kathryn, died when Eliza was young, but there are moments when I photograph her and I see Kathryn so clearly.

Love does not end. It changes shape. It shows up in afternoon light, in a baby’s grin, in a mother’s hands, in the quiet echo of someone deeply missed and still deeply present.

Florence Kathryn, you are so loved.

Pulled them out of their own engagement for a minute.

Down a back alley, wet pavement, city humming -
just enough distance to remember what this actually is.

Upstairs, they were surrounded.
Family in the room, and family felt across the ocean.
Laughter, hands, glasses raised. All of it.

And then this - quiet, dark, just them.

Six months.
A coffee.
A 6pm proposal in a lounge room.

No performance. No big production.
Just two people who already know.

Some love doesn’t build slowly.
It just arrives, fully formed.

Some seasons don’t ask for permission before they change.
So you hold each other a little closer.
You laugh a little louder.
You let the kids stay sandy longer.

Because right now, the sun is warm,
the tide is gentle,
and love is here in its simplest form.
Bare feet, tangled hair, arms wrapped tight.

No big declarations.
Just quiet promises held in the way they lean into each other,
in the way hands find hands without looking.

This is what it means to be anchored.
To be steady for one another.
To choose joy anyway.

One golden afternoon,
stitched into forever.
