Point King Lighthouse was a lighthouse located on the northern entrance to Princess Royal Harbour in Albany in the Great Southern region of Western Australia.

The lighthouse was the first navigational light for the Port of Albany and the second lighthouse to be built on the West Australian coastline.

Following the end of the Crimean War in 1856, a return of the profitable mail boat service from England, via Albany, to the eastern states was anticipated and the need for a lighthouse into the harbour was foreseen.

The British Government proposed to construct two lighthouses in the area in 1857, one on Breaksea Island and the other at Point King, on the understanding that the local government met the running costs. Construction commenced shortly afterward and the prefabricated lights arrived in June; the project was completed later in the year and the lighthouse commenced operating on New Years Day in 1858 with William Hill employed as the light keeper.

Springdale Beach, Denmark, Western Australia.
Between 1929 and 1957, the railway track ran directly along the foreshore. Trains would stop near Springdale Beach to drop off holidaymakers and allow local farmers to transport goods.

It was the site of the town's first formal guesthouse, which helped establish the area as a holiday destination.

Experience being under the Denmark bridge!

More than just a way to get from Albany into town, this bridge is one of the last of its kind in Western Australia! Constructed in 1968 after a dramatic fire left the town temporarily stranded, it was rebuilt using massive, traditional timber logs—a true feat of rustic engineering that still carries the South Coast Highway today.

The Gondwana Connection: The granite at The Gap is roughly 1.16 billion years old. It was formed during the collision between Australia and Antarctica. In fact, if you look south across the Southern Indian Ocean, you’re looking toward the very spot where the two continents finally tore apart about 53 million years ago.

A "Rising" Landmark: The granite didn't start at the surface. It formed 20 kilometers underground as molten rock. Over millions of years, the softer overlying rocks eroded away, allowing the granite to rise, expand, and eventually crack into the block-like stacks you see today.

Torndirrup National Park, which houses The Gap, was designated in 1918, making it one of the very first national parks in Western Australia.

The "new" visitor center is part of a 2010s/2020s reimagining of the 1968 Civic Centre. When that 1968 building was first constructed, it was considered a bold modern addition to the streetscape, marking the first time Albany had a "free public library" combined with an art gallery.

The recent $2.6 million upgrade that created the current Tourism and Information Hub involved stripping back that 1960s infrastructure to create the open-plan, tech-heavy space that now serves as the city's main orientation point for travelers.
