SAR 709 was still on the boil today, despite all the rain! VR A2 925 also had a well welcomed run at the railway, visiting from over the border.

Here's another clip from SteamRanger Rail Fest 2021, this time with 621 followed by Rx224 and Rx207 up the back, returning into Mt Barker from their shuttle trip to Bugle Ranges. This day was Rx224's return to traffic after a several decade long rebuild.

I won't be at SteamRanger Rail Fest tomorrow, here's where I'll be instead, running SAR 709!

On this day 5 years ago was Rx224's return to traffic after a several decade long rebuild, as part of the 2021 SteamRanger Rail Fest celebrations.

Here is a clip from this event 5 years ago featuring Rx207, Rx224 and 621 departing Mt Barker on the first trip of the day. This was Rx224's very first revenue train post rebuild.

SteamRanger Rail Fest is on again tomorrow at Mt Barker and all three engines are anticipated to run!

This week is National Volunteers Week in Australia.

Without volunteers, the tourist/heritage rail scene would come to a halt.

Why do we volunteer? Because we love it!

It's a social activity, it's not just about the trains. It allows us to share our passions with the public and allows us to contribute to the greater good of the community.

Thank you to all my fellow rail hertiage volunteers, both young and old, new or experienced. We all play our part and we should all support each other to keep our hobby alive.

Being the sole surviving original condition SAR Bluebird Railcar, #257 is an important member of the National Railway Museum's diesel fleet. These diesel hydraulic railcars were built in the 1950s for long distance passenger services. The 250 class Bluebirds were fitted with Cummins engines and Voith transmissions, plus a GM auxiliary engine to run the lights and air conditioning. RC257 is in operable condition and is brought out for special events a few times a year.

I turned the cab of SAR Garratt Locomotive #409 into an immersive experience for our patrons for this year's Behind Closed Doors event.

This included temporary lighting in the firebox and gauge lights, and speakers playing appropriate audio recordings to set the scene (which could be manually controlled from a phone/touchscreen mounted in the cab, allowing visitors to 'blow the whistle' etc.)

(PLEASE NOTE: the locomotive did NOT have a real fire in it, and it remains a static exhibit.)
