Sheep gathering

Every September, when summer is over, the farmers of Iceland gather together their sheep, bringing them back home from the highlands. This is a huge event in every village, and all the locals and even some tourists participate, every help is needed to gather so many sheep together. They guide them into a special fencing system, where they are separated. This was a perfect opportunity for us, to capture the Icelandic sheep close together, but it was also really spectacular to watch! Lonely Island

On our way to the Vestmannaeyjar islands we saw this small island. There was nothing else on it than this small house and some sheep. In the background Eyjafjallajökull, the famous volcano that erupted in 2010, is rising. Imagine how it must be, to spend a week on this island, completely isolated from the rest of the world, only yourself surrounded by nature.

Golden hour

During our year in Iceland, we took two weeks off, to travel the parts further away from where we lived. Kirkjufell was one of those places. We have already seen many pictures of this place, so we were really looking forward to go there and create our own version of it. But when we arrived, it was pouring. Quite disappointed, we made ourselves comfortable in a small local coffeeshop and waited. Time was passing and we almost lost hope of being able to take any photo of this famous mountain. But eventually the rain stopped and we set out. There were many other people around, hoping to capture that perfect sunset, but the scenery was all grey in grey. We still had some hope left, that the clouds will disappear and we will be able to see a nice sunset, so we waited. Only some clouds vanished, and the sun set quite unspectacular. People started to leave and almost left alone we wanted to go back to our camp as well, but then we realized that the clouds started to change their color. So, we decided to wait for a bit longer, and we got rewarded with the most beautiful colorful sky framing the mountain.

Coastal views

This image was taken along the south-eastern coast of Iceland. We lived in Egilsstadir in East Iceland for one year and therefore drove this road quite often. We wanted to get this drone for a long time, showing the orange lighthouse on the coast with the majestic mountains in the background, but whenever we stopped it was too windy, to start the drone. But it wasn’t only the wind, there were usually also hundreds of sea birds flying around.

Anyway, we didn’t give up our idea, so every time we drove past this place we stopped and checked. And one day we seemed to have the luck on our side, we got out of the car and realized there are way less birds flying than usual, and furthermore it was calm. We took the chance and started our drone, René was flying, I was just watching around to make sure there are no birds flying to close to the drone. We got the shot we wanted to and flew back safely. When we started to pack everything, the wind slowly picked up. On this day we were on the right place at the right time.

White Stripes

Zebras are having a very strong bond within the herd, so it’s very common to see them resting their heads on each other’s bodies. But to get this shot like we wanted, was not easy at all. There were other zebras in the way, it was impossible to get to a position to have them parallel to us, the background was distracting... These were some of the things that kept us from getting THAT shot.

But then one day we were on a Game Drive and we came across a small herd of zebras on a big open plain with a beautiful mountain range in the background. We thought this scenery is just perfect, so we decided to wait.

We were sitting in our car, watching them. We watched them grazing, we watched them interact with each other and finally there were two of them posing exactly how we wanted. But again, there was a third zebra standing in front of them. We kept the camera ready and waited further, desperately hoping for that one zebra to move out of the picture. And after some long moment holding our breath and hoping for it to move, it did so and we finally managed to capture this moment.

Once again nature taught us that being patient is one of the most important things in wildlife photography. It’s not going to work every time, but if it does it will make you forget about all the hour you just sat there and waited.

Survivor

We had this shot in our mind for a long time – a portrait of a dagga boy looking straight into the camera. It was on a cloudy day when we came across a few old buffalos during our Game Drive and within this group we spotted him, an old dagga boy, completely covered in mud (like the name suggests), the ears torn, the horns worn off, a fierce glance. This was the one! We slowly drove our car a bit closer to him and stopped.

He was lifting his head up and looked directly at us, giving us goosebumps. The strong expression in his eyes made us wonder what he was going through during his life, what battles he had to fight, what he had to withstand to survive. Because this is what he was – a survivor of the African Bush.

Pride

Our plan was to fly home for Christmas in 2022, but than a new variant of COVID hit, so we cancelled our flight and stayed in South Africa, where we rented a car to travel around. On Christmas day we reached Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park. It was our second time to visit this Park, and we knew it has a high population of White Rhinos, all of them still wearing their horns. Unfortunately, the high prices of rhino horn make these animals very vulnerable to poachers and therefore many parks and reserves are nowadays dehorning their rhinos, to protect them from poachers. That’s why we were eager to capture a photograph of a rhino, that shows it with its horn, proud, strong, powerful. We drove around and managed to view quite a few of those majestic animals, but all of them were resting lazily in the mud to cool themselves. It was getting already quite late in the afternoon, clouds were starting to build up and the air started to cool down, when we saw some movement on one side of the car. We stopped and saw this beautiful rhino bull on top of a hill starting to move towards us. Quickly grabbing the camera, we managed to capture exactly what we were dreaming of – a portrait of a rhino, so strong and proud, and yet so vulnerable.

Portrait of a puffin

Black and white feathers, a colorful beak and a red ring around the eye – Atlantic puffins are truly attractive birds!

When we lived in Iceland, we lived around one hour away from a breeding colony of Atlantic puffins. As they are most active around land during late evening hours, we used to drive there in the afternoon. And then we just waited for them to show up. We have spent hours and hours of waiting, observing, taking pictures. We came home tired and with full SD cards. This portrait shows the perfect colors of the puffin so well, blending into the soft background. It’s one of our favorite puffin photographs we took during all the time we spent with these unique birds.

First sunlight

To capture the reflection of Stokksnes was in our mind for quite a while. We stayed in a village close by called Höfn, and decided to drive there in the morning to capture the first light. Luckily it was winter, so we didn’t have to wake up very early. We drove there and started to look for the perfect location to capture the reflection of the whole mountain range. When we finally got it, the sun started to rise and shine on the tips of the mountains creating some beautiful light. This is how we got exactly the shot we wanted and even more.

Forever

Atlantic puffins are spending most of their time somewhere in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Only once a year they come back to land for around four months with the intention to breed. They are monogamous birds and often return to the same burrow with the same mate, year after year. Even parental duties like incubation are shared equally between the couple. One of the ways to maintain their strong bond, is to rub their beaks together. When we saw these two puffins, we just had to capture this special connection.

Whatever there’s happening, they will stand together until their chick is old enough to fend for itself. And then they will depart again, each for himself, until they come back again after a year.

The king

We spent some time in Kruger National Park. As every morning, we woke up at 04:00 am to make sure we are out in the field when the sun rises. We left our camp and were wondering what this day brings for us. Still a bit tired from a short night we drove along the main road, when suddenly there was some movement in the high grass. We stopped and almost couldn’t believe our eyes, a beautiful male lion was lying there, just a few meters from our car and if he didn’t move, we would not have seen him. His fur and mane had almost the same color than the high grass. We waited; he didn’t move a lot. He just lay there, lazily, resting after a long night. The sun started rising in his back. And suddenly he decided to lift his head for a short moment, so we could capture this beautiful portrait of him in the morning light. Only a few seconds, before he lay his head down again. We were happy and decided to leave him be and continue to see what else this day has to offer.

Focused

It was during a morning Game Drive, a very quiet drive. We have seen some Jackson’s hartebeest, some buffalos, but the drive was mostly quiet. We were on our way back to the Lodge for breakfast, when our guide suddenly stopped the car and lifted his binoculars. “There’s a leopard in the tree” he said, we didn’t see anything. He started the car and drove closer, and then we could see him as well. A beautiful male leopard was laying over one of the branches of a big sausage tree. We didn’t drive to close, in order not to disturb him, but we were close enough for him to take notice of us. He didn’t seem to be concerned by our presence, but still kept watching us focused with his big yellow eyes. We took some photos and then decided to leave him again. On the way back we asked our guide how he spotted the leopard. He told us, he just saw his tail, hanging down from the tree moving from side to side.
