With a 60 year old camera in Prague

The moment after I release the shutter creates a silence in me.
The reflection on the ground glass disappears and in the same moment I still can see it. It’s like when you stare directly into the sun and close your eyes, just in a very beautiful way. Photography is no longer a choice for me, it’s a need that I have to satisfy.

This ambrotype of pool billiard world champion Jasmin Ouschan has quite a story to tell. The goal was to do a more serious portrait to show her dedication to the sport and her fighting spirit. And as many of you know, I like to do very clean plates. As you can imagine I was a bit upset how this one turned out. But then I remembered that this is a glass plate, that I cleaned on purpose in a way to get this streaks on the plate. But I totally forgot that this is exactly that plate during our portrait session. So I captured afterwards another perfect tintype. But, now here comes a big BUT. At some point I liked this one much more. I started to love the texture that gives you a more organic feeling and because the plan was anyway to use a different kind of background on this glass plate, it works very well. So it’s a planed not so planned happy accident that at the end turned exactly out how I expected to turn out when I prepared the glass plate. And at this point I want also to mention a discussion I had with the extremely talented and great portrait photographer Gabriel Baharlia
As a perfectionist it’s quite difficult to let go and let a process take over your work.
But if you are brave enough to let thinks like this happen, it really can pay off.
I remember when he told me that and couldn’t agree more. Thanks Gabriel! Another big thanks to BUT‘KO and her family for the paintings that are wonderful backdrop for this portrait

I love to work on my Kodak 8x10 large format camera. The custom ground glass made by Zebra Dry Plates and Mehovke Primer Cameras is such a great preview of what I will get

With an ambrotype (Wetplate portrait on glass) there are so many options to choose for a background, so I choose a pool billiard cloth and I think it works out really well.

Coating the glass plate with a self made collodion is always nice to look at.

Gold was the idea of the wonderful artist BUT‘KO and that’s how she and her family took care of it.

Another version of a hand made painting of BUT‘KO and her family

7 seconds, this is the time it took to expose this portrait of pool billiard world champion Jasmin Ouschan It’s like capturing a movie in one single frame … a few breaths, thoughts that come and go, maybe some tiny movements and this corporation resulted in a portrait that is full of positive energy. I used extremely old chemicals for this portrait to add additional texture that makes it more organic. Full making of video link in my bio

It’s always a magic moment when the fixer dissolves silver that was not exposed to light and reveals the final portrait. I work with the wet collodion process now for over 11 years, but this magic never gets old

The wet plate collodion process I work with is over 170 years old. It’s called wet plate, because the plate needs to be wet during the whole time. At the end the plate is washed for 30 minutes to make it last forever.

Honored to feature today the first portrait of Jasmin Ouschan for my „Inspired Series“ on a collodion wet plate. Making of video link in bio. This is also the final portrait series for my book!
